Girls on the Run® is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. Our curricula address all aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being.
Girls on the Run International (GOTRI) is the parent organization of more than 150 Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada. GOTRI establishes, trains and supports a network of community-level councils with local volunteers. The volunteers serve as role models to the girls through coaching the 12-week, 24 lesson curricula. The curriculum is delivered in these areas through after-school programs, recreation centers and other non-profit settings.
Help make a difference in the lives of girls everywhere!
Mission
To educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living
About
Girls on the Run is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to thirteen years old. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.
Objective
The Girls on the Run objective is to reduce the potential display of at-risk activities among its participants. The goal is fewer body image dissatisfaction leading to eating disorders, less depression and suicide, as well as fewer substance/alcohol abuse problems and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.
Our Approach
Girls on the Run delivers its message to young girls through volunteer coaches and mentors. Our 10 week character development program teaches very specific and well-defined social and personal skills. Each program "season" ends with a non-competitive 5K run/walk event which gives the girls a chance to shine and a sense of goal accomplishment.
